Walking Hot and Cold

To the left of us it looked like a warm summery sunrise.

But looking left over the basin it's obviously wintry cool.

Cracked ice covers the tidal grasses in rounded mounds.
(Ha, there was a printed cotton in the 90's we used to call 'cracked ice'.)
(I used it a lot.)
Back to the sewing machine today.

Scratched and Wrapped

Two weeks into a new scratching
and the rolling around a stick has to begin

The sun came out but not strong enough to melt the mountains of snow

Finally a day at the sewing machine.
A deadline is fast approaching
so I resort to the machine.

Wednesday...a day of row upon row of straight stitch.
Thursday was spent zigzagging over and over.

Friday we travelled up the valley to the eye doctor
then returned for the evening showing of 'Life of Pi'.
We get such good movies in our small community thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

Woodpeckers are getting fat on my suet balls!

I'm very fond of a higgledy-piggledy blanket stitch.

Dancing for his Breakfast

The pheasant comes every morning
and ruffles his feathers

Digs for seeds
on snowy ground covered in bits and pieces blown from trees
in the windy days we are having

He struts about

and when he's had his fill
he saunters off back to the woods.

Meanwhile a mourning dove watches
from a tree's protective arbour.

The Cardinal and the Squirrel

The cardinal found the seeds on the old tree stump first

But the squirrel soon chased him away

The cardinal decided to explore lower ground
but as you can see
the squirrel decided to follow.
No peace for the timid cardinal!

Snow Walking

Silently the snow keeps falling

The rusty pups and us are the only fools
trying to walk in deep virgin snow

I don't think we made it half way up.
Should find my snowshoes

Wonder what this tree lived through.

Windswept and Snowbound Scratchings

Boy oh boy, what a windy snowy week it's been.
Lots of time indoors to start a new scratched scroll.

Year of the water snake

The wind howled through the trees and around the house.
The old dead tree that the heron used sit atop has broken in two.

We trudged up the mountain on virgin snow.
Boy is that hard work!

The pheasant comes for breakfast every day

It is so strange coming out of our small grocery store
and seeing the biggest eagle
perched on the skinniest branches atop a tree.

Snow, snow and more snow!
Might use up all my white thread soon.

Little Things That Brighten Up A Winter's Day

Red beauty brightening up a winter's day

Knowing there was a storm coming

he munched on sunflower seeds most of the afternoon

and the chickadees darted from feeder to bush
tapping at sunflower shells until they released their fleshy seeds.
