Bits and Pieces of Older Work

Coming face to face
with my work
hanging in other people's homes
always takes me aback
especially when I've forgotten all about the piece!
Apologies for the photo quality
the light was bouncing around from many windows.

I've come across the sketchbook
drawings for this piece lately

and think I might take another look

Wonder how I would approach something
similar today

Details of another piece
of an osprey diving

with added spirals

and symbols of Venus

and Mars

plus a feather....kind of.

  1. It is a slightly odd feeling, isn't it. Even when you haven't forgotten the piece! Still - were you pleased with the pieces when you saw them again?

    1. Actually, I was thrilled to see them and thought they looked better than I expected! That is strange for me because I am my own worst critic.

  2. This is a glorious piece! I do know what you mean, seeing something long after its been created. There have even been times when I've forgotten the piece completely and think 'did I make that?'!!

    1. And then you realize your body of work is way bigger than you thought! Actually the pieces (as always with textiles) looked way better than my lousy photography...way too much light bouncing around.

  3. It's always fun to see the work of sometime ago ... (am I still satisfied with it, would I change some things if I would make it now .... ????, and sometimes yés, that's exactly as I would do it again nów ... ;-) !)
Lovely scratchings: the feather, the paws, the quilters !!!

    1. Yes, sometimes I am quite ashamed of older pieces but in this case was relieved to find I actually still liked them! and the quilters are my favourite too.

    1. Thanks, Lynette...Are you having a gentle winter down there? Or do you get covered in snow like us?

  6. Fascinating to see your work evolve, isn't it? And to see how there are themes that recur over time. These rich textures are fabulous, Penny. -sus

    1. Oh, yes, the recurring themes....That is indeed fascinating. Quite common with artists isn't it. I often wonder if there is something in life that we are trying to work through subconsciously...for sometimes we don't realize we're redoing thee same stuff.

  7. these are just so beautiful I want to be able to put my nose right up close and examine the stitches (with glasses off and very short sight!), feel the texture under my fingers, thank you for sharing them

    2. Indeed ... I hope you gave the centre of those peonies a gentle tickle with a forefinger

  9. I rarely end up keeping anything I create so it's always a surprise when someone hauls a piece out to remind me of it. I know how you must have felt when you saw this again. I really do try now to take a photo before I get rid of a piece but don't always remember.
