Finding Old Messages and Making New Ones

After photographing my frosty stream on Monday
had to scratch a memory of that
steel grey water edged with snow and ice.
Then it snowed on Tuesday.

Rummaging through old sketchbooks
I found this page of intention from 12 years ago.
Surprised to find I was interested in daily scratchings back then.
Shows you there is no such thing as an original idea!

This is what I wrote immediately after
declaring those admirable intentions!

Yesterday I was intent on covering this page of colour with potential stitches
when lo and behold a bird of sorts simply insisted on being included.
Perhaps it means my handsome heron will soon be back from the sunny South.

  1. That one will make a stunning piece of stitchery!

Maybe you could make it in time to greet him when he comes back :-)

  5. He reminds me of a Thunderbird from Native North American mythology! I've always loved stories of the Thunderbird.

Isn't it amazing looking through old sketchbooks? I've noticed certain symbols/themes crop up over and over again in my sketchbooks throughout the years.

  9. Love this bird -- the colors are wonderful. Sketching is not something that I do and I love to see yours and then to see what they become in stitchery.

    1. nope, but I filled a whole sketchbook...not bad. I'm trying to remember what colours I used but I love all the quinachridone (I think that's how you spell it) colours produced by Golden acrylics.

  13. I really like this idea of "scratches". It takes the pressure of sketching. Online you see all sorts of fabulous art under the title of "doodles". If these accomplished works of art are just doodles it can make my own sketching look decidely unformed. Scratches on the other hand makes me think of lazy marks made in the sand with a stick on a sunny day. No pressure, just absorbed in the moment.
