Some Red and White Stripes on Canada Day


This is the biggest pileated woodpecker I've ever seen.
He is at least 17" long with a huge wingspan.
You can tell he's a male because of the red moustache by the beak.


Then he was joined by his mate...
you can see she doesn't have the moustache.

  4. I had a huge one here the other day, too.... he flew right past where I was sitting in the garden I felt a great woosh of air. Later I heard him drumming away at a tree.... they are wild!

  6. They are very shy birds who usually like to stay back in the woods and let us know they are there by their drumming on trees. That's why I have such huge holes drilled into my trees!
