I had a huge one here the other day, too.... he flew right past where I was sitting in the garden I felt a great woosh of air. Later I heard him drumming away at a tree.... they are wild!
They are very shy birds who usually like to stay back in the woods and let us know they are there by their drumming on trees. That's why I have such huge holes drilled into my trees!
I can occasionally hear pileated woodpeckers, but to see them must be a thrill. -Sue
