After photographing my frosty stream on Monday
had to scratch a memory of that
steel grey water edged with snow and ice.
Then it snowed on Tuesday.
Rummaging through old sketchbooks
I found this page of intention from 12 years ago.
Surprised to find I was interested in daily scratchings back then.
Shows you there is no such thing as an original idea!
This is what I wrote immediately after
declaring those admirable intentions!
Yesterday I was intent on covering this page of colour with potential stitches
when lo and behold a bird of sorts simply insisted on being included.
Perhaps it means my handsome heron will soon be back from the sunny South.
That one will make a stunning piece of stitchery!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could make it in time to greet him when he comes back :-)
Perhaps as a flag to let him know he's welcome!
DeleteSuch an elegant bird who is sure it's where it's supposed to be!
ReplyDeleteA self-confident bird!
DeleteWhat a charming fellow! Happy Leap Day, sus
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a special day...an extra day comes in handy every now and then!
Deleteold friends are never far from your heart...maybe you have invoked the heron to fly your way...cheers
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sure he's on his way!
DeleteHe reminds me of a Thunderbird from Native North American mythology! I've always loved stories of the Thunderbird.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing looking through old sketchbooks? I've noticed certain symbols/themes crop up over and over again in my sketchbooks throughout the years.
You are right...very much like the Thunderbird.
DeleteSketchbooks....so important....never a waste of time.
oh o love the heron
ReplyDeleteNot many creatures find their way into my work at the moment; but this one might.
DeleteI so love these daily stitches, like a journal ....!
ReplyDeleteGreat bird and páper stitches
Yes those stitches seem to becoming more journal-like.
Deletea heron found her way into my mailbox this week! they're coming back soon, soon.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! Let's hope an early Spring will bring my fellow back soon...but perhaps not in the mailbox!
DeleteLove this bird -- the colors are wonderful. Sketching is not something that I do and I love to see yours and then to see what they become in stitchery.
ReplyDeleteDon't hold your breath...it takes me quite some time from paper to stitch!
Deletethis looks like Handsome Heron to me, for sure. soon.
ReplyDeleteDo you have Handome Heron down there? perhaps he wintered with you.
DeleteThe colors, so bold, with the many dark 'stitches' and a mighty bird! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYes, very bold for a snowy Canadian day!
DeleteCan you remember how long you did keep it up? And do show us more of your flame-backed heron - it's such a fabulous set of colours!
ReplyDeletenope, but I filled a whole sketchbook...not bad. I'm trying to remember what colours I used but I love all the quinachridone (I think that's how you spell it) colours produced by Golden acrylics.
DeleteI really like this idea of "scratches". It takes the pressure of sketching. Online you see all sorts of fabulous art under the title of "doodles". If these accomplished works of art are just doodles it can make my own sketching look decidely unformed. Scratches on the other hand makes me think of lazy marks made in the sand with a stick on a sunny day. No pressure, just absorbed in the moment.
