Fundy Shore

Fishing huts standing crooked

Making a communal effort to stay put against
shoreline winds

Two of us standing outside
but still inside the window.

A brand new lobster boat still shiny and new

They will go out again on the next high tide
to gather in their traps

An eagle had made his own catch
and was dining over there on the rocky edge.

Erosion from salt and wind and sea.

A Painterly Week

Taking classes are good for the soul!

Monday found me driving from my home in the woods
on the Fundy side
to Chris's home on the cliffs of the South Shore.

On Tuesday we drove to Chester Art Centre
for a two day workshop with Heather Sayeau.
As we painted on Wednesday
cameras were rolling outside.
They were filming 'Haven' a TV program.

On Thursday we painted in Chris' studio.
Before driving home we visited
the Westcote Bell Pottery where I
couldn't resist a couple of treasures.

On Friday a group of us drove to Sandy Cover.
a Tiny village on the Digby Neck.
We went to hear Kaffe Fassett
talk about his love of colour and design.
We were all amazed he came to our little corner
of this world.

Busy, Busy Week

A week full of activity.

Monday we made tracks up the valley
to the doctor's.
Tuesday found us at Grant and Joan's for a BBQ
to meet his children and grandchildren
but also to celebrate his 75th.

Chris and Sarah arrived for three days of painting plein air.
slight problem...it rained for two of those days!
So my stitching studio became and hive of painting activity.
The girls brought food and made sangria.
Then the sun came out for our third day together.
A perfect day of painting over the mountain
in Delaps Cove.
Oh, yes, and we stopped traffic on the road to
make sure a huge snapping turtle crossed
in front of us safely.

Saturday being a special day for me I tried to remember my
shorthand and stitched a secret message for me.

Have a nice week.

The Magic of Three

One morning the RP's and I disturbed
not just one
not two
but three herons.

Lucky for me they just moved up the shoreline.

They kept an eye on us though

as they waded on those long, long legs.

Then two of them had had enough
and off they went across the basin.

Some Feathered Friends

Messenger between us and the heavens.
Always a special sight
especially on this day
the twentieth anniversary
Thinking of you Steven.

Every morning at sunrise
I visit with the osprey
on my way to the dike
with the Rusty Pups.
I hope there are babes up there
but haven't seen them so far.

Beneath the osprey every single buoy
usually has a single cormorant perched on top.

And here is the seagull with his huge breakfast.

Requiem for a Tree

Arthur blew through a week ago
leaving many scenes like this.

It is always sad
I feel like me trees are protective sentinels
No we have one less to protect us from future winds.

Can you see that carpenter ants were making a home in there?

I am still playing catchup with all the events
I wasn't able to upload in the aftermath.

Up a Tree

If I pretend to be a tree
perhaps those pesky RP's will leave me alone.

.......who me?........

Getting Back to Normal.

Hurricane recovery mode

I don't like wind
nor do I like not having electricity!
incapable of creativity
So I've been sorting and taming muddled threads.
The break in these threads means we still have no power.

One of my morning joys at the moment
is seeing the osprey obviously feeding young
high up there in their nest
with a view of the Basin on one side
and the river on the other.
The power finally came back
and the young man whose dog we once rescued
came by and cut up our fallen tree.

Days of recovery
an evening of mystery theatre with friends
and a brand new umbrella
to give us some shade.

The Week of Arthur

A week I thought would become a week of critters and birds
but Arthur changed all that.

Every three months I start a new scroll of fabric
so Canada day always means a new beginning.

The loons were surprisingly vocal
on our Tuesday morning walk
and then we spied an eagle overhead.
There must have been babes
perhaps riding on mother loon's back.

On Wednesday the RP's chased a raccoon up a tree.
Raccoon then tried to make like a tree
hoping we would go.

At low tide we get to watch shoreline birds looking for breakfast.
Today we spied a seagull with the biggest
wriggling shrimp.
Quite a feast.

On Friday we were told to expect Thunderstorms
but none came.
Of course we started to think that
perhaps Hurricane Arthur might not be so bad.

We were wrong!
Saturday was our anniversary...
...we had plans.
But Arthur swept in
cut off electricity over a huge area
We lost a big healthy tree
and I did something to my back.
Oh, yes and we had a bag of potato chips for our
anniversary meal!

Still no power.
I walked the dike
and was tickled pink to see a tiny green tomato
sitting there on top of the dike.
So green tomatoes do travel!

I will post last week's scratchings tomorrow.

A Spider's World

"Will you walk into my parlour?"
said the spider to the fly.

"Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy...."

from "The Spider and the Fly" poem by Mary Howitt
