When the Night had a Thousand Eyes...

....dragons and their families lived in caves and were protectors of princesses and other treasures. I reckoned dragonflies were part of the picture too. Made this many years ago. Gosh winter must be coming, I'm looking backwards.

  1. Lovely dragon and perfect to warm up winter. I remember seeing and being impressed with this at one of the York Heritage shows. It's nice to revisit the past!

  2. Sometimes it's nice to review. It can give a clearer picture to where you want to go.

  4. And I thought you said you don't do 'fierce' :) Love the interesting shapes and those eyes in the dark. What fabrics is it made of?

  5. Hey, you're right, Yvonne..he is pretty fierce isn't he! The black cave shape is cotton. I drew the front dragon with bleach. The dragon back in the cave is machine stitched with a black metallic thread. Outside the cave are my own hand-dyed cottons. had great fun making princess dolls dotted about the edges. Under the dragon are all kinds of fabric scraps with beads and things I made out of paper clay.

  8. This is wonderful, really rich and I like the way it is almost a stage setting. Gilly

  9. He is kind of staged, Gilly. the shape of the cave mouth is from Fingal's Cave in Scotland.

Hey Kaite, Bubicla sounds much more romantic than Harry!

  10. this is a very complicated piece...i'm glad
you spoke of how it was made...i was having
a hard time imagining the materials...really
really nice and talk about mixed media...!

  11. This may have been made many years ago but it's right in vogue right now too! Sometimes looking backwards leads us forwards in ways we don't expect.
